How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

Lab grown diamonds are quickly rising to fame, whether its a luxury gift, an engagement ring, a mangalsutra or just something to wear everyday. But a lot of people are still not aware how lab grown diamonds are made. In this blog we’ll explain and break down 2 of the major methods used to make lab grown diamonds CVD(Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT(High Pressure High Temperature) so you can make an informed and confident purchase.

What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, created in advanced labs using cutting-edge science — not mined from the earth. They’re chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. The only difference? Their origin.

The Two Ways Lab Diamonds Are Made: CVD vs HPHT

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

A thin diamond seed, which is a tiny sliver of a diamond flat thin and polished; Is placed in a vacuum chamber to which a carbon rich gas like methane is introduced. Carbon atoms deposit layer by layer onto the seed forming a diamond crystal. This method produces high quality white diamonds and often products type IIa diamonds which are the purest kind. This is backed by the fact that many fine jewelry brands in India use lab grown diamonds made via this method.

HPHT(High Pressure High Temperature)

This method works by imitating the conditions found deep inside Earths crust, precisely the heat and high pressure. A carbon source is subject to temperatures over 1500 C, and very high pressure. A diamond crystal is formed over several days. This method is used to produce Industrial grade diamonds, the diamonds usually have a slight yellow tint

CVD or HPHT?

Whether CVD or HPHT labgrown diamonds offer a sustainable, pocket and eco friendly alternative to natural diamonds. CVD Diamonds are known for their superior quality, purity and are adopted by many jewelry brands including us!
